Push Up Bras

The push up bra has become a common body practice among women. It is not uncommon for women to wear push up bras on a daily basis. Victoria Secret more recently came out with a line of push up bras called “miraculous bra” which adds two cup sizes to your breasts. The push up bra helps to life a women’s breasts as well as make them look larger adding to more cleavage to show. Many women feel like their breasts aren’t big enough naturally therefore instead of resorting to surgery, a push up bra works just fine. You could call it “false advertising”. This can also be an example of docile bodies because many women do have normal size breasts but still choose to wear push up bras because other women wear them so they feel like they should as well to enhance their breasts. Push up bras seem like the “norm” when you walk into a Victoria Secret store because they are the majority of the bras displayed. In lecture we talked about the women in the video that was shown how she didn’t feel like a “real women” without breasts. It seems like this may be why many women wear push up bras because it makes them feel more like a woman. It has become almost a cultural practice in the U.S. to wear push up bras because as a national culture we see bigger breasts as a positive asset. Or even a praxis because many women feel as though they should be wearing one because they need their breasts to look bigger, why else would Victoria Secret create such a large push up and have it be one of their best selling bras? It has definitely become a body practice to wear a push up bra for women. Women are using the push up bra to shape their body to look more attractive because of what is not naturally there. The link below is to a picture of the miraculous push up bra by Victoria Secret, clearly this model is probably an A cup naturally but looks like a D with this bra on.

  1. I think this is so true! I think the reason why we women are obsessed with these bras is because they put us one step closer to that ideal figure that women are assumed, by the media and the public, to have. I think it is actually sad that our docile bodies act along because it just goes to show how insecure we women of today are. We might be holding campaigns, talking about how we are as intellectually capable as men and this to others might seem as if we have become more confident over the past years, but as much as we have become intellectually confident, our image confidence has gone to the gutter. Long ago women where rather proud of what they had, nowadays women go to whatever lenghths within their scope to become something the society approves to be right. The saddening thing is that most women would rather get plastic surgery but due to money constrains have to settle for the push ups. I mean what more are we going to do to our bodies before we realize and prove to everyone that we look good the way we are??
