Those Savages?

The part of the movie I am deciding to talk about is towards the beginning when some doctor I'm guessing is talking to Grace about why they are going to Pandora to get unobtanium. He tells her that one kilo is worth $20 million and that's what is going to pay for all of their "sciency" stuff that they are using for the project that is so expensive. He calls the Na’vi people savages because they are getting in the way of the human's business there, trying to get the unobtanium. My thought was “how ridiculous.“ I kind of laughed at that one, because in the end the humans are the savages. They are the ones ruining the avatar's land and their lives, just to get money. The avatar people are just trying to protect their families and their sacred land. They were perfectly fine until the humans started coming and dissecting their land. Once they invaded, everything went downhill. The Na’vi people are pure beings, who live with the land and the animals, and the humans are the savages who only care about material things and getting money, no matter what they have to ruin in order to get it. The colonel who promises Jake his legs if he does what he wants refers to the avatars as savages many times, but in reality he the savage for giving the orders to disrupt the beautiful planet of Pandora. He doesn’t care about the Na’vi whatsoever.

We can all see towards the end how the humans are the savages. We come in to their territory and destroy all of their beautiful land, searching for things that will enrich the humans, more money. The marines come to Pandora and shoot, blow up, burn, basically demolish everything they can lay their eyes on. They ruin the Na’vi’s sacred tree, which impacts their lives tremendously. They ruin everything that matters most to the avatar people. This clip made me feel embarrassed of the human culture. It made me feel as if we think we are so superior and nothing we do is ever wrong. Of course this is a movie, but some of it portrays to real life also. The white culture thinks they are superior over everyone else. They think they can do whatever they want and it will be okay. That is what this scene in Avatar reminded me of. This scene also made me sad to think of how badly the Na’vi’s land was destroyed after the battle. They are not the savages. The humans are the savages, only caring about themselves.

  1. I keep getting confused: are you speaking on the notion of human culture or white culture as a hegemonic entity bent on destroying others? If its white, I'm very curious to know whether or not all the soldiers were indeed white? Would that theory hold true if there was a black soldier? All I know is that ALL scifi does is place a real life issue into their themes, so I feel like evidence like that could demolish this idea. I personally felt that this spoke on what capitalism does to humanity. It turns us into barbarians whose nunmber 1 priority is to enrich itself.
