Avatar

One of the main scenes in Avatar that stuck out to me was when Sigourney Weaver’s character (Grace) was dying and the Na’vi tribe came together to try to keep her alive. Even though she wasn’t one of the tribe, they still wanted to help her survive. The whole tribe was in a circle surrounding the tree of life and put Grace in front of it. Then the tree was saying how it was up to the spirits whether she would die in her human body or be an Avatar. When she did end up dying, the entire tribe felt the pain along with Jake.
I liked the idea of the tree with all of its magic and the people always coming to it for advice. I feel like the tree was shown as a sort of god to the Na’vi tribe, and it always helped them make the best decisions and gave guidance. It even helped Jake earlier. The fact that the tree and the tribe came together for Grace represented the Na’vi people as being really pure and accepting of others even if they are different. The tribe always wants to help for the greater good and doesn’t try to take advantage of things for themselves and be greedy. This again goes back to showing how the natives are good people versus the other the bad, aggressive white people.
Even though in the beginning the tribe was against Jake because he was different they liked him more when he tried to accept their ways and become more like him. This is basically the same thing as the “white people” not liking the Na’vi tribe because they are different and wanting them to conform. So this was sending some mix signals for me in terms of showing the Na’vi as being good ones when it’s pretty much true that many cultures aren’t as tolerant of others at first. Ultimately, though, I think the message being sent was that we should all accept one another because we’re all living creatures.

  1. I agree with you when you say the tree is sort of a god. It is definitely put up on a pedestal for everyone to look up to. It is very difficult to fit into a group of people when you clearly do not belong in that group. Those who can overcome the differences are the ones that succeed in the end.

  2. I didn't think of the tree being a God, but now that you mention it, it really is like their God. They turn it for answers and send their prayers to the tree. It is nice when they all come together when bad things happen. And it is really hard to fit in where it is obvious you don't belong. When people try their hardest and make an effort to look past those differences, that's when someone can fit in to where they may not belong. That is a powerful thing, not really in the movie becuase that's fake but when it does happen in real life. We are so judgmental and make it hard for people who are different than us to fit in. Good reading.
