The Avatar and The White Messiah

There are too many things to talk about in Avatar, not only it has done a great job on special effects and gorgeous pictures, but it also delivered someting that beyound the beautiful pictures, the war and the romance. Avatar helped us to see the way we identify ourselves and the "others", and by doing this, we will getting the conclusion that the White Messiah fable is wrong.

The scene I want to talk about is the one we played in the class, which is the speech from legendary Colonel Quaritch. He says "we are not in Kansas anymore, we are in Pandora.... If there is a Hell, you might want to go there for a little R&R after a tour on Pandora....Beyound that fense, every living things.... wants to kill you". His speech is strong and powerful, and which also identify the species in Pandora as the terrible monsters who likes to eat people. Obviously, his purpose is to encourage his soldiers to kill the "living things" in Pandora without mercy. However, at this point, the reality has been distorted by Politics, and the reality is The Legend wants to destory the Pandora and get the Energy resource.

In addition, The soldiers of The Legend in Avatar identify themselves as the one with humanity, or with "absolute justice". In which case, people only think songthing like "We are the good guys and the others are bad guys, we are here to kill the bad guys and which makes us a better guys." They simply think everything in this world can only be classify into two categories :Good and Bad. However, the truth is that they are killing innocent people, and that is the power of the White Messiah. Fortunately, in the end Jack descovered the truth and fight to Pandora instead of his own species.

We have seen too many movies that are producing White Messiah, like Rambo, and the audience also likes those movies because we want to be pleased when watching movie, and it is enjoyable to see OUR good guys killing OTHER bad guys. In many cases those white messiah movies slowly changed our way to identify the real world, after walk out from the Moive theater we started to identify the OTHERS (it might be people with different races, langurage or from different countries) and started to hate the OTHERS.
