I will fly with you

I have chosen the scene where Jake has captured Toruk and has shown his prize to the people of the Navi. After being "betrayed" by Jake, they now accept him back into society. Furthermore, they bring him back as their only hope for survival against the mercenaries!!! Analyzing the Toruk, we see that it signifies an overwhelming power among the people of society. I think it speaks volumes that Jake "links" himself to Toruk itself, showing that he is that very power. He alone controls it. Also realize, though, that only one person has ever caught Toruk before Jake in the entire Navi history. Now cmon: does this not just carry the stench of of white man messiah? It brings to the audience the idea that only the white man was able to bring the power and wisdom necessary to combat the other white men. It makes the audience feel like there's actually hope for the Navi, who had NO CHANCE if Jake hadn't come along.

Another part that I think brings out a nice part of the scene is that Jake finds it important and essential that he help the navi live and double-cross his white brethren. I think this speaks to an important notion that it's what's inside as a person that counts and bloodline or specie doesn't matter. This is really the one nice message I can get out of this scene.

Now, how am i sure that this is a white man messiah? oh my goodness, the evidence piles up! First, before he shows up, the Navi, like scared creatures, are huddled around their sacred tree, in need of a miracle in order to survive. The very desperation captured by this scene shows that they are in need of a savior. It is at that point of desperation that a white man comes before them with a plan. Also, Toruk Maktou radiantly arrives upon the Navi from above, as if he was a god from the heavens itself. um, cheesy? yes. Jesus? I guess so... though I always imagined him coming on a chariot...

  1. Maybe it's only that the white man thinks of overpowering Toruk, making it his own, similar to what the military is trying to do to Pandora. If Jake were to truly become a Na'vi, he might have just left the creature be, but because he is born white and human, he must overpower something to show his alpha-male status, even as a new race.
