Pandora: A Place That Represents Possibility

Although the story was not that attractive, I was struck by the CGI works and I want to say that Avatar is probably one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. Colors, tones and shapes that they picked in this film are just spectacular and are beautifully presented. It is a truly visual pleasure for people, like me, who watched the film in 3D in theater. Now I wonder how Avatar 2 will be presented.

Frankly, a lot of shots and scenes do appeal to me because I am a big fan of action and CGI works. But the scene I will be talking about for this blog post has nothing to do with action and CGI, however, it is more about how the idea of Pandora is presented. It is the scene where Jake Sully was first transformed into his Avatar body in laboratory. He became so excited and he ran out of the lab without permission with his new legs. Because of Pandora and the Avatar body, Jake does not need to wait to get his real legs back until he gathers information and intelligence for his own kind, human beings. He got his new legs in Pandora. Sure he was excited and quickly adjusted to his new body, sooner than everyone expected. Pandora is a place where Jake can walk and run again, and to feel what it is like to stand and to feel what he is standing on. It seems that everything is so new and different as Jake has his first bite on a fruit. Pandora represents possibility because a person who was disable to walk can walk again; Pandora represents possibility because one single tiny special element is worth 20 million and it can do a lot of goods; Pandora represents possibility because it suggested that if you have determination, nothing is impossible as Jake can successfully ride on the Great Leonopteryx.

What is being signified in this scene are of course Jake's new legs which represent that Jake again gets his power back. He can do what he does because he gets his legs back. In the meanwhile, it can also represented as determination and confident. Throughout this film, Jake shows his determination and confident in Pandora in a lot of different ways. It is not hard to notice that there is always medium shot of his new legs. Furthermore, when he runs outside and stops and stands on the soil, medium shot of his legs appear again in order to emphasize two things: first, Jake gets his power back and also freedom, second, Pandora is a presentation of nothing is impossible.

  1. I totally agree that the imagery and effects in Avatar were great and that it wasn't so much the story line that was appealing for me. The way it was shot and all the time and effort that went into the production and creating the film is what really sets it apart from others nowadays. There are so many unique little details that make up Pandora. It seems to represent a place completely different from our world, and I think you were right when saying it shows that nothing is impossible.

  2. I agree completely that Pandora represents that nothing is impossible. It is such a magical place and many mystical things are portrayed there. It is a beautiful place, and nothing seems to be polluted there like things do in the real world, well until the white race comes in and tries to ruin it for their own gain. The effects in this movie were so amazing, I didn't get a chance to see it in 3D and I still think the colors and everything are some of the best effects in all of the movies I've seen. The moment Jake is in his Avatar body for the first time is a touching moment in the movie to me because you can see how much he cherishes having his legs back again. They focus on that so much and I didn't notice how big of a moment that was until I watched it for a second time this weekend. One of my favorite parts is when he ran out of the research lab once he's in his body and he is outside standing after running, and they focus on his wiggling his toes in the dirt.
