McDonald's Chicken Nugget Sauces

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CC8_IbHYQss

The above youtube link is to a commercial for McDonald’s chicken nugget’s six new sauces. It is a well-known problem in the United States that we have a national obesity problem. After watching this commercial where they play pump up and fun music to dunking chicken nuggets in their new sauces it really makes me think why Americans consume fast food like we do. The commercial conveyed positive psychological influences that would come as a result of eating their product. They showed enjoyment of dunking the nuggets, which shows a good experience surrounding the consumption of the food. He jumped for joy at the end of the commercial after consuming the nuggets, displaying satisfaction from the taste of the food. The way the chicken nuggets look perfectly crispy, adding to the appeal of the food and with the eye opening dunk into the sauces makes the viewer start to crave them. “Reading” this commercial makes the viewer feel like this fast food item is an appealing choice because of the portrayed reactions of enjoyment and satisfaction to eating the nuggets. It makes one excited to go try these new sauces with the way it is represented. The way the man in the commercial represents himself, he is healthy and looks active. It gives the wrong image to the people watching, that you could look this happy and healthy from eating these chicken nuggets. It screams, “by consuming this product you will be this happy, this fit and this satisfied with the food” as the man in the commercial. This commercial is also an example of social construction. These commercials make it seem okay for every American to have fast food; that it isn’t that unhealthy for you. We have made it okay to portray fast food in a positive light and made it acceptable to consume fast food on a regular basis, making fast food a very competitive and profitable industry. There is push for American society to become healthier and be more conscious of what is being consumed but commercials like this counter this effort with highly effective marketing strategies.
