Abortion

Pro-life or Pro-choice? In our society this seems to be a dividing question. Pro-life believes that, no matter the circumstances of the mother, a baby is a baby and should have the right to live. Pro-choice on the other hand feel a mother should have a right to abort a baby if she so chooses.

However, it seems the real question behind the two sides, is when does life officially "begin"? When is a baby really considered a baby? From the moment of conception, Pro-life will argue, does life begin. Though the embryo may not have thoughts, let alone eyelids, it could be considered a human being. The common view of many christians is that abortion is immoral and sinful. In this sense, many people believe that abortion, at any time during the pregnancy, is murder. The difference in terminating a pregnancy at week 3 and week 12 differs drastically.

However, if a mother's life was put in jeopardy due to a pregnancy, it could be argued that one life would still be lost for the sake of another. Additionally, if a pregnancy was the result of a traumatic experience such as rape, reasons to abort the baby could also be justified in the eyes of some people.

Many times, a person's opinion on this matter is influenced by either a strong faith, or personal situations. Everyone has different factors which determine their stance on this issue. It can be immensely hard to understand where the opposing side is coming from.

  1. this is definitely a very heated issue all around the world. Many faiths, not just christians, believe abortion to be sinful. Not only is this a huge religious debate, it is also a huge political debate. governments all over the world have to decide either to allow abortions or to ban them. No matter what, they have to decide one way or another. This can cause huge controversy and widespread violence from certain groups depending on the decision made. Regardless of the outcome there is always going to be a group of people unsatisfied with the decision.

  2. The question I have with abortion is whether or not science will eventually be able to dominate the religion To the point where there can be a definitive answer to this seemingly perpetual conflict of ideologies. From my standpoint, religion is a beacon of stability and traditional ideology that has brought comfort to people for milleniums. On the other side of the coin, we have science, which at this moment, never seems to slow down in discovery. Every time I turn the corner, there's another definition, a new technology, a new understanding of the world we live in. So I pose the same comment the Joker places in front Batman in The Dark Knight: "So this is what it's like when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object."

  3. I could only sigh reading your post because this is an issue I have tried to understand and till now have failed. Some people I think, are quick to judge because their giving a third persons perspective and do not really understand the situation it's self. It's just like how I can condemn anyone who steals and yet maybe for that person at that moment stealing seemed to be the only option. In the same way I am against abortion in general however I cannot truly conclude that I would stick to this opinion if ever I was in a situation where abortion was a choice I had to consider. It really is a controversial topic, I think. People should sometimes put really put themselves in the other persons shoes before they cast any stones.
